Goldrush Ambassador Jesse Kriel’s stellar career has hit a new high after he was named as Springbok captain for the team’s match against the Barbarians on 28 June, 2025. This appointment marks the first time ever that Jesse captains the Bokke, taking over from regular captain Siya Kolisi, who had to withdraw from the team with an injury.
It’s a notable career milestone for Kriel, who has enjoyed an illustrious domestic and international career, playing mostly at centre but also at fullback and wing on numerous occasions.
Jesse’s first ascent to the higher level occurred in 2013, when he was included in the South Africa Under-20 squad for the 2013 IRB Junior World Championship. The following year, he was included in the South Africa Under-20 side for the 2014 IRB Junior World Championship and named as one of two vice-captains for the tournament.
After being selected for the Bulls Super Rugby team in 2015, Jesse was subsequently selected for the Springboks and played in the 2015 Springbok World Cup squad. He was also part of the 2019 World Cup-winning squad and played an integral role in the 2023 World Cup-winning squad. Jesse has earned 79 international caps and has scored 18 tries.
Congratulations to Jesse and good luck to him and the entire Springbok team!
