Jesse Kriel in Japan

Jesse Kriel in Japan

In the first of a series of Q's and A’s, we chat to Springbok Centre and Goldrush ambassador (and occasional Springbok captain) Jesse Kriel about his life and rugby in Japan:

Q. How have you found the experience of living in Japan so far — and how easy (or challenging) has it been adapting to the language and culture?

Living in Japan has been an incredible experience. It’s very different culturally, but that’s also what makes it so rewarding. The language was definitely a challenge at the start — it still is in some situations — but you learn to adapt quickly, especially through rugby and daily interactions. The culture here is built around respect, discipline, and attention to detail, which actually aligns really well with a professional sporting environment. Once you understand those values, settling in becomes a lot easier.

Q. From both a personal and professional point of view, what have you gained most from your time playing in Japan?

Professionally, it’s helped me grow my game in ways I didn’t expect — especially around skill execution, speed, and decision-making. The Japanese style really emphasises precision and consistency. Personally, it’s been huge for my growth off the field. Living in a completely different environment pushes you out of your comfort zone. You become more adaptable, more aware, and more appreciative of different ways of living and thinking.

Q. How would you compare the standard and style of rugby in Japan to competitions like the United Rugby Championship and Super Rugby?

The style in Japan is definitely faster and more open. There’s a big focus on tempo, ball movement, and skill, whereas competitions like the URC and Super Rugby can be more physical and a bit more structured at times. That being said, the standard here is very high. The top teams are extremely well-organised, and because of the speed of the game, you’re constantly under pressure — physically and mentally.

Q. What’s been the biggest difference in day-to-day training, preparation, and match intensity compared to what you’re used to back home?

One of the biggest differences is the attention to detail in training. Everything is very structured and deliberate — there’s a real emphasis on doing the basics exceptionally well, over and over again. Match intensity is different, too. It might not always feel as collision-heavy as back home, but the speed of the game and the constant movement can be just as demanding, if not more so, in terms of fitness and concentration.

Q. Off the field, what have been some of your favourite experiences in Japan — any standout moments, food, or places that have surprised you?

There’s been a lot. The food is definitely a highlight — everything from sushi to ramen, and even the convenience store meals are next level. I’ve also loved exploring places like Kyoto and getting a feel for the traditional side of Japan, as well as Tokyo, which is just on another level in terms of energy and lifestyle. One thing that’s really stood out is how safe, clean, and efficient everything is — it makes day-to-day life very easy, even when you’re far from home.
